There are few places in the world as diverse and beautiful as the Rocky Mountain state. Here are some of our favorite activities to do in Colorado:
Hiking and Mountain Climbing – Colorado is a hiker’s paradise with numerous trails and campsites available throughout the state. If you are feeling brave and want to try mountain climbing, you can take on one of the famous “fourteener’s”, named for towering over 14,000 feet high. Colorado has 53 different mountain peaks registering as official “fourteener’s”.
Skiing and Snowboarding – There is no disputing that Colorado is one of the top destinations in the country for winter activities. This state’s numerous ski/snowboard resorts typically stay open between early October to late April for visitors to enjoy the famous dry, fluffy snow.
Visit Great Sand Dunes National Park – This park containing some of the highest sand dunes in all of North America is open to the public 24 hours a day. The tallest sand dune, Star Dune, is over 750 feet high. You can hike to the top to get a great view of the natural phenomena, and then snowboard down just like the locals do. This park is also famous for its great unobstructed views during meteor showers.
Raft on the Arkansas or Colorado River – Colorado’s famous white water rafting is known world-round. Whether you prefer a leisurely boat ride to take in the scenic views, or want to brave the Class 5 rapids, you can find it all in this state’s waterways. Make sure to get on the water before summer ends, most rafting companies shut down in September.
Mesa Verde – This national park is host to numerous ruins built by the ancient Pueblo peoples, also called the Anasazi. They lived in these dwellings from approximately 600 to 1300 AD. Most of these homes were built from sandstone, wooden beams, and mortar, and are still standing today for visitors to observe.
