First inhabited in 1868, the city of Elko and the surrounding area, is now the largest for over 130 miles in all directions. The city is home to Great Basin College, as well as the National Weather Service weather forecast office serving most of northern and central Nevada. Elko was first established by the Central Pacific Railroad company, but blossomed into a center for ranching, mining, as well as rail and other supplies.
Elko’s average high during summer months is between 60-80 degrees Fahrenheit, with an average low between 40-50 degrees Fahrenheit. These comfortable temperatures make for perfect weather for hiking, exploring, riding horses, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, mountain climbing, and camping outdoors.
The world famous Ruby Mountain range, located to the southeast of the city, can be seen for miles in all directions of northern Nevada. The Ruby Dome reaches a maximum elevation of over 11,000 feet and is a favorite for avid hikers and mountain climbers. The entire Ruby Mountain range is located within the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, which makes up over 6 million acres and is the largest National Forest in the country, outside of Alaska.
During the summer months, some of the Elko locals can be found enjoying the hidden lakes of the famous Ruby Mountain range. These lakes can be a perfect cool-off spot after a scenic hike up the mountains. Griswold Lake, shown above, is at an elevation of over 9,000 feet above sea level.
The Humboldt river, which flows through most of northern Nevada from east to west, is the third longest river in the Great Basin area. The river is home to various trout, smallmouth bass, and the occasional beaver, and is a favorite for Elko residents looking to fly fish or just enjoy the water.
As you can see, Elko Nevada has an endless supply of places and things to be enjoyed outdoors. But, the city is also home to many local casino’s, restaurants and bars, and various shopping that can be enjoyed when you want to head indoors for a change of pace.
